SAVE THE HIMALAYAS / CHAPTER ONE

A Film by The New Leam

Hydroelectric projects, construction of massive dams, development of roads and many other infrastructural and real estate ventures have lead to large scale felling of trees, landslides, earthquakes, climatic upheaval and loss of land fertility. The massive encroachment and destruction of the Himalayas is a grave collective concern. This film looks at the problem through the eyes of the local inhabitants of Uttarakhand.

  1. Congratulations! Great work. We need to care; we need to resist the demonic forces consisting of contractors, greedy politicians and the techno managers of ‘development’ because if the Himalayas are destroyed, we lose as a civilization–its ecosystem, its abundance and its philosophic wonder. It is an exceedingly difficult task. Yet, the saner voices have to come. It is good that as you are working on education, you have thought about it. The narratives, the visuals and the brief presentation are good. The can of pepsi/coke in front of the snow clad mountains–the camera has revealed it beautifully–the way our tourism industry with its middle class culture of consumption has further added to the process of destruction of the Himalayan wonder. Make more films on the mountains, people and their struggles, resistances and aspirations.
