Top Story: Idukki, Kerala Experiences Major Landslide, Rescue Operations Continue
In Kerala’s Idukki district landslide 17 people have been killed and the struggle to rescue over 60 others feared trapped under debris is going on. Twelve people have been rescued and sent to Munnar’s Tata General Hospital for treatment. This landslide occurred due to heavy rains over the last three days, that also led to the disruption of power and communication networks. PM Narendra Modi tweeted that he was pained by the loss of lives due to the incident and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those injured.
DU Professor Hany Babu Has Been Sent to Judicial Custody Till 21 August for Alleged Involvement in Elgar Parishad Event : Professor Hany Babu who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Elgar Parishad Case by the NIA, has now been sent to judicial custody till August 21 by a special court after the end of his NIA remand on Friday. The NIA undertook an investigation of the case on January 24, 2020. He had been arrested on July 28 for his speculated involvement in the Elgar Parishad Case.
India COVID-19 outbreak : The coronavirus tally in India has crossed the 20 lakh mark on Friday and the country has reported 62,538 new cases over the last twenty-four hours. The total count in India is now 20,27,074 and over 10 lakh cases have come up in just twenty-four hours.
Film shooting : The Bombay High Court has now allowed shooting sets to work with cast and crew members above the age of 65 years.

Online Conduction of Final Year Examinations for DU Students : The Delhi High Court has asked DU to conduct final year examinations for final year students in the open book, online form. The High Court has now cleared the air and decided to grant DU the permission to conduct online open book exams for the students of the final year. These final year examinations that would be conducted online will begin from August 10.
COVID-19 and Jarawa tribe : Andaman’s Jarawa tribe threatened as five staff members of welfare body test COVID-19 positive. The coronavirus pandemic has been taking a toll on the entire global community and perhaps no community in the world can be spared its fateful spread. Local authorities have remained very concerned off late as five staffers of the Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti (AAJVS) have tested positive for coronavirus. The staff who tested coronavirus positive are under medical care and the process of contact tracing is underway. This is a matter of concern because the authorities feel that the members of the Jarawa tribe have become vulnerable to the infection. It is for this reason that even the field office of the AAJVS has been closed down.
Child labour rescued from garment factory : The rescue operation of 35 children from a garment mill in Tamil Nadu has reignited debate on child labour. The coronavirus pandemic has multiplied the instances of child labour, recently over 35 children have been rescued from a garment factory in Tamil Nadu reigniting the debate on prevalence of child labour in the country.
